"Fujimori Is An Assassin And Those Who Support Him Are Complicit"
The criminal manner in which the Peruvian Government resolved the situation at the Japanese embassy in Lima demonstrates the incapacity of governments to resolve with dialog the conflicts that they, themselves, generate. It disgusts us to hear and read support for Fujimori having liberated the hostages which was achieved at the cost of the assassination of the members of the MRTA commando. The good treatment of the captives, the clear desire to not create victims among them, the showing of the cruel face of the Peruvian regime, none of these have served to impede the enthusiastic approval of the bloody action that the army took against the members of the MRTA. Beginning today, silence will fall again like a blanket over Peru. The news media will move on to other realities, leaving forgotten everything that we have been getting to know since December 17. The political prisoners will go on rotting in the prison-cemetaries that they find themselves in. The Poverty and Misery that the majority of the Peruvian Pueblo lives in will be silenced by the rapaciousness of the multinational corporations. Repression and the violation of human rights will be left as the only repsonse of the government to the people's demands. In spite of the gloating of the Peruvian government and the applause of other governments, nothing has been resolved. We will again hear the decision to continue struggle for a peace with justice. We will again see people committed to not ending life without rebelling. Those of us in Euskal Herria who have bet on a society that is more just, more free and more democratic tell you that in that you can count on our solidarity. This is the best homage we can give to the memory of the assassinated MRTA militants. Bilbao, April 23, 1997 Komite Internazionalistak Askapena
